| What is your favourite story? |
About 5 years ago, my husband, step-daughter and I were enjoying a September Spring night in our backyard. We live on the corner of quite a busy road; it was around midnight so traffic was light. As we went about our conversation we heard the screeching of brakes followed by high pitch screams, our hearts instantly broke as we recognised it to be that of a puppy.
My husband jumped the fence as we were told to grab towels. We ran to the scene only to find a little Staffy X lying on the road with a BIG BLUBBERING Rottweiler standing over her. After convincing the Rotty that we were there to help, a bit of "therapy" at play, he allowed us to pick up the puppy and do some checking. The Pup was in a bad way and we predicted at the time that she was a few months old.
The Rotty had a tag with a mobile number on it, after calling and calling the number with no answer (later found out that the owners had a new born in the house so had it turned down) we tied the Rotty to a tree out the front of our house, thinking that if the owners did come looking he would be visible, my step-daughter kept him company!.
Off to the vet we went. With no microchip we still couldn't contact the owners and so left the little one there with our details for the vet to call should we be needed to consent to any surgery etc.
After a sleepless night with Rotty tied to tree out front, 6:00am came and our gate opened and a very excited Rotty came out of his bad mood. His owner had arrived, dressed in robe and obviously shaken by waking up to find his dogs missing. We greeted him out the front to tell him the bad news of the puppy, found out name was "Widgy" and gave him the vet details and our number to keep us updated.
Well, our phone number came in use for another reason. Widgy got out of the vet that evening, OK, just shaken and bruised. The owners were planning a weekend away and didn't want to take the pup, smart they were, knew that at least I had developed an attachment to Widgy, they ask if we would take her for the weekend. Couldn't refuse, 6:00 pm on Sunday night came and our phone rang, they were home but wondering if OK that they don't come and get Widgy, part angry, part excited I told them not to bother.
So, now Prego (didn't like Widgy and "your welcome" in Italian seemed more appropriate) lives happily ever after with our family and spends her fun filled holidays at Akuna Care!!
